mars-rover-opportunity
The little Mars rover that could, Opportunity, is about to get a memory wipe so it can keep on chugging. NASA engineers will download all data on its flash memory and switch the rover to a different operating mode. The long-distance maintenance should give Opportunity a performance boost and avoid failure situations. Designed for a 90-day stint on Mars, Opportunity has been on active duty for more than 10 years. [More...]

If you want to see an IT pro twitch, bring up Shadow IT in a conversation. "Shadow IT" is a term applied to technology deployed by an organization's users outside the purview of the IT department. It's bothersome to system shepherds because it can open up an organization to data leakages. It's also growing. Many Shadow IT programs run in the cloud, but all clouds are not created equal. No one seems able to come up with a better security system than the eminently hackable user-password combination. It seems that every time a violation of note occurs, users are reminded that they should have unique long, complicated combinations for each of their accounts -- and change them frequently. They should supply false answers to security questions and remember those, too. [More...]

People have been reluctant to discuss whistle-blower Edward Snowden's revelations about the NSA's surveillance activities in social media, the Pew Center Internet Project reported last week. Only 42 percent of the 1,800 adults interviewed by the center were willing to post their views on the topic on their Facebook and Twitter accounts, although 82 percent were willing to discuss it face to face. leap-motion-oculus-rift
Leap Motion has come up with a way for Oculus Rift gamers to expand their peripheral vision in the virtual setting. "Imagine being able to grab onto a virtual object with no intermediary," said Strategy Analytics' Eric Smith. "Things as simple as opening a door -- very mundane, but it's those very realistic experiences in VR that allow you to lose yourself when you're in those games." [More...]

A very interesting book just hit the market. Written by Martine Rothblatt -- apparently she is America's top paid female CEO -- its title is Virtually Human: The Promise -- and the Peril -- of Digital Immortality. The subject is digital clones, and Rothblatt goes into depth about what they are, when they are coming, and the likelihood they eventually will have equal human rights. [More...]

huawei-ascend-sapphire
Huawei can claim it beat Apple to the punch with its sapphire-display smartphone, but until Apple slaps sapphire glass onto an iPhone, iWatch or iSomething, it won't draw collective sighs of wonder. Speaking of sighs of wonder, that's how I responded to the hat with a radio and headphones sewn in that I got as a boyhood gift. The Archos Music Beany looks like it could be almost as cool. [More...]

Rumor has it that when Apple reveals its much-hyped iPhone 6 on Sept. 9, one of the features it will be trumpeting -- finally -- is near field communication. The NFC tech will enable mobile payments, Wired reported, citing sources "familiar with the matter." Wow. If this is true, it could be the catalyst that propels mobile payments into the mainstream. [More...]

samsung-gear-s
It's not clear which gender will identify more with the Samsung Gear S smartwatch, but its styling has got some analysts puzzling over the company's intentions. "Are they being gender-specific?" wondered Wayne Lam, a senior telecom electronics analyst at IHS. "The Samsung device looks almost feminine." It's likely Samsung -- and the guy wearing it in the product shot above -- would beg to differ. [More...]

ralph-lauren-polo-tech-shirt
Ralph Lauren's Polo Tech shirt may appeal only to a small niche demographic, but the technology it uses eventually could have much broader applications than tweaking an elite athlete's performance. "The key to Ralph Lauren's shirt ... will be to add more and more features -- for instance, monitoring blood pressure for at-risk users," suggested tech analyst Zeus Kerravala. [More...]
