This week ends with one of the most important days of the year. It's called "Black Friday," and it could decide the future of a lot of battles and tell us whether this will be a good or bad season economically. There are two big battles that may actually be decided this week based on initial sales numbers. For Microsoft, which had its butt kicked last year by the iPod, this is its chance to show it gets it and to take the fight to Apple. For HD-DVD and Blu-ray, this is when Wal-Mart steps in and tries to do to this market what it did to TVs last year.

Educate yourself about Blu-ray & HD-DVD before making your purchase. Knowing the facts about Blu-ray & HD-DVD will prove to be crucial in the future of your Hi Def purchase.
Ask yourself this simple question: "Why am I buying an HD format?" Your answer should be, "So I can watch movies in the BEST picture quality available."
The Best picture quality on the consumer market today is 1080p. Now that you know this, don't be fooled by the attractively cheap price of some HD-DVD players. Beware of the cheap player! Run like hell from the cheap HD-DVD player! The only thing you will accomplish from buying the cheap player is that you will now have to buy Discs for $30+ without actually being able to watch them how they are intended to be viewed and that is in 1080p.
ANY player currently under $399 will NOT give you 1080p video resolution. All the players that everyone made a big stink about a few weeks ago are NOT full HD. Plain and simple, "Those people got ripped off!"
The most inexpensive HD-DVD player on the market that actually plays in full HD Resolution is the Toshiba HD-A30 which will run you $399.99 at BestBuy http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8494499&st=hd-dvd&type=product&id=1186003898849
#2. Eventually all PC/Laptops will be equipped with an internal HD drive, whether it be Blu-ray or HD-DVD. Disc space is a tremendous issue as far as the new formats are concerned and Blu-ray heads this category by more than 4X. HD-DVD currently has a triple-layer 50GB disc in development but for now it's reported to be "in theory" only. Blu-ray currently has a 100GB disc (See Here: http://www.techgadgets.in/storage/2007/08/hitachi-intros-100-gb-blu-ray-disc-compatible-with-existing-drives/) that is going to be released for consumer use Q1 of 2008, with a 200GB disc on it's heals. The Blu-ray camp has also stated that 200GB is NOT the ceiling. TDK has developed the 200GB Recordable Blu-ray Disc for consumer use (See Here: http://www.engadget.com/2006/04/28/tdk-ok-were-done-with-the-200gb-recordable-blu-ray/) which can be used to store "Years of Home Movies".
#3. The movie studios. This one might seem like it doesn't matter but it might actually be the main deciding factor in the format war. As we all know, the movie studios and U.S. Government are trying to protect it's investments and the economy by arresting movie bootleggers and copying plants that are infringing on Federal Copyright Laws. The reason why the majority of studios back Blu-ray is because of it's protection & security features. HD-DVD can not boast this feature. It has none. HD-DVD can be copied and counterfeited and then passed on to you, the consumer.
Although Paramount has recently signed an 18 month, HD-DVD exclusivity deal with Microsoft in exchange for cash & prizes totaling $150 Million, mostly every other movie studio is backing Blu-ray. Know this, you can pretty much see where this whole war will end up.
#4. Beware of HD-DVD spin and HD-DVD Propaganda. The HD-DVD camp makes it very confusing for the consumer. They don't report the fact in a way that is easy to understand. Know the facts before going into the stores.
Now you have a little knowledge about the two formats. Shop wisely and have a happy & Safe Holiday season.
