Re: E-Tailing According to Smiling Jeff

Remarkably, it has been almost two months since the terrorist attacks on the United
States, and e-tailers are already having to focus on holiday sales. The clear leader
among online merchants still seems to be Amazon.com. Why? Probably because its leader,
eternally smiling Jeff Bezos, seems bent on innovation for the sake of growth.

You gotta be kidding me with this article. What is it 1998? These guys are in endless trouble and just LOWERED their guidance a week and a half ago. Rearranging the money losing venture with ever new initiatives that fail to change the fact that these guys are severely glubbing underwater, will not get them there.

Pulease.

I second Flambeee's comments. Amazon.com has been, and will continue to be, the master of the great shell game, can you guess where the profits are? All support from AMZN will leave upon reaching $5/share. This goliath will fall - it is only a matter of time. This article is a sorry attempt to paint a rosy picture on a bleak and dreary canvas. A definite "A" for effort on trying to spread holiday cheer, but an utter failure in reporting reality. Just keep smilin' Jeff.

No I have to disagree with the first two people who responded to this story. The point here is not about how great Amazon is. The point is that Amazon is trying to take proactive steps to reassure a very insecure buying public. Say what you will, but the company is still standing and still plugging away and the things described in the article could really help to make the public feel better about shopping online.

Anne,

Running a profitable company and reassuring a skittish consuming public are two different things. Amazon can help people "feel better" all they want even if it is done to the detriment of their shareholders - that is precisely the point. I agree with you, what they are doing is admirable but in the end it is not beneficial for them.
