In a continuing effort to streamline product development, Google announced Wednesday the company will be shutting down its Google Labs project. The Google Labs initiative was the tech giant's testing facility, where employees and engineers were given creative freedom to tinker with experimental projects that perhaps didn't necessarily fall within their job descriptions. The emphasis on encouraging innovation and imagination was seen as one of the core elements that separated Google from competitors.
I wonder if this may seem like a good idea today, but is going to kill the future of Google?
While many companies do well living off their past accomplishments, the tech field has proven time and again that this behavior leads to obsolecence.
Yet, I wonder if Google is really just shoreing up their operations and will continue with labs but under a different name and guise--I am sure there are those in the company that are creators and those that are builders and maybe this is an effort to assign those roles more accurately.
In any event. I would hope that some form of labs survives for everyone to enjoy and Google to continue to inovate and lead.
