A capsule of the Genesis space probe plummeted Wednesday into the Utah desert after its parachute failed to open, dimming hopes that its contents will provide clues into the origins of the sun. The extent of the damage was not immediately known. Television pictures showed the capsule tumbling toward Earth over the western state and eventually striking the ground. Aerial footage showed the wreckage, intact and half buried by the force of the impact.

Does anyone else think it's odd that our National Aeronautic and Space Administration is still using parachutes in the year 2004? Wasn't this the same technology used on the first space flights dating back to the middle of the last century? Is it possible that a multi-million (billion?) dollar venture to capture information was foiled by technology that is over two hundred years old?
