Will 2012 See the Last Big, Bold CES?
January 02, 2012
This month begins the march to 2012 technology with the Consumer Electronics Show just around the corner. Vendors have already started prebriefings for what will likely be a cascade of announcements all happening in the same one-week time frame. This will be the last year that Microsoft keynotes or has a major presence at this show. Like Apple, Microsoft is moving to an event-driven, rather than show-driven, schedule.

In-Your-Face Advertising That Consumers Might Love
September 21, 2011
3D marketing is powerful -- and even more so, when it's delivered to the palm of your hand. Mobile 3D is becoming an increasingly common way of grabbing, holding, and entertaining consumers. From using current mobile technologies to create a sense of 3D, to creating actual images that seem to pop off the screen and into the air, mobile marketers are using the power of interactivity.
Shopping Online, Up Close and Personal
July 27, 2011
Shopping has traditionally involved an element of seeing, touching and feeling a product before buying. Shopping online, however, hasn't ever quite replicated that experience. That is, until now. With the advent of 3D technologies, online shopping is on the verge of a radical transformation.
Adventures in Invention: Printing Objects
June 07, 2011
Maybe the "printer" part of "3D printer" is not exactly the right word, since printing has so long been thought of as a two-dimensional process of applying ink to paper. But the term, like the 3D printing process itself, seems to be here to stay. 3D printers, which use a wide range of technologies to produce actual objects from digital files, are revolutionizing what it means to conceive of, design and make things.
The New Digitally Driven Generation of Artists
May 19, 2011
Our world has gone digital, so it makes sense that the worlds created by artists are going digital as well. A new generation of artists is blending creativity, art and technology in innovative and unpredictable ways -- a process of testing limits and pushing boundaries that artists have always done.

LG Puts 3D on Optimus Smartphone, World Waits to See Why
February 14, 2011
"Big screen, middle screen, little screen," might be a fast way to describe the journey of 3D technology, the last leg of which LG unveiled Monday at the Mobile World Congress. The world's first three-dimensional smartphone, LG's Optimus 3D runs the Android operating system on a 4.3-inch LCD glasses-free screen. Images don't jump out at users, but live on the screen with depth.
Sony's Many Flavors of 3D
January 07, 2011
Last year's CES was 3D TV's great big debutant ball. The world was shown something kind of cool-looking and told, This is the future of home entertainment! Behold! Everyone oohed and aahed appropriately, then went out and bought tablets. Most people only upgrade big-screen TVs when there's something very wrong with the one they have now, and not doing 3D doesn't quite qualify as "wrong" yet.

Samsung Shows Off Svelte New Smartphone
January 05, 2011
A couple of weeks ago, talk surfaced of a super-thin and super-bright phone in the works from LG. Despite whatever happens with the so-called "LG B," it won't be the only handset around with a bright smile and the thin waistline. At Samsung's CES event Wednesday, Omar Khan, CSO of Samsung Telecommunications America, whipped out the Infuse 4G, what he called "the thinnest phone in the AT&T portfolio."
Toshiba Gambles Its Glasses-Free 3D TV Tech Is Good Enough
January 05, 2011
Special glasses to view 3D movies have been around for decades, almost representing a bad theatrical cliche -- rows of eyeglass-clad teens screaming, for instance, as an ax from the latest slasher film comes bolting out of the screen. Now, Toshiba is taking the glasses off.

Google Adds a Little Magic to Earth
November 30, 2010
Calling it "the next generation of realism" Google has introduced the latest version of Google Earth, promising more seamless interactivity with Mother Earth and some unusual new features. "In Google Earth 6, we're taking realism in the virtual globe to the next level with a truly integrated Street View experience -- and 3-D trees," explains Google product manager Peter Birch.
Here Comes the Holodeck
November 19, 2010
As if scripted for a "Star Trek" episode, news of a real-life, real-time hologram instantly projected images of holodecks in many a sci-fi fan's head, only to be dashed and challenged and revived again. The action opened with an announcement that a technological breakthrough by researchers at The University of Arizona produces a true hologram -- one that can be viewed from any angle and without 3D glasses.

Through the Looking Glass: 3D Everywhere
September 02, 2010
"What is the use of a book, without pictures or conversations?" That's the question Alice asks at the beginning of Lewis Carroll's classic adventure. Perhaps Mr. Carroll knew more than he realized. 3D Movies. Multitouch screens. iPads. Everywhere you look, consumers increasingly demand more of an "experience" when engaging with their content, be it a book, a movie or their computers.
Toshiba Making Passes at 3D TV Without Glasses
August 24, 2010
Toshiba has reportedly confirmed it is working on technology for a 3-D television set that won't require viewers to use special glasses. However, details are scant, and the company declined to say when such TVs will hit the market. Toshiba isn't alone in working on technology that will let viewers watch 3D TV without glasses.

Camera Makers Take 3D to the Living Room
July 29, 2010
With 3D movies now mainstream fare in theaters and 3D TVs adorning retail shelves, it was only a matter of time before 3D consumer camcorders would begin to hit the market. That time was this week as two camcorder makers, Panasonic and DXG USA announced 3D camcorder products. Panasonic's 3D offering, the HDC-SDT750, is a camcorder-lens combo expected to sell in the United states for around $1,400.
