Simply put, these numbers are dismal, said Andreas Scherer, managing partner of Salto Partners.
OpenStack Gives the Open Source Cloud a Lift
April 09, 2013
Since its start in the summer of 2010, the OpenStack open source cloud computing project has been the subject of a lot of hype. OpenStack is relatively immature and still requires a high degree of technical aptitude to deploy, but its community continues to grow.

April 05, 2013
I am going out of town. And what do I do? I copy all my crucial files over to a high-capacity USB drive so I can have access to my documents on the road. That works to a degree. However, nothing beats having access to my desktop when I'm away from my PC. Fortunately, there is a device that gives you secure access to your desktop or another designated computer from remote locations.

It seems fair to say that every tech community out there has its own hot-button issues that are pretty much guaranteed to get conversations flowing and blood pressures rising. The Linux community, of course, is no exception, and it's difficult to imagine a better illustration than a debate that came up recently. "The Linux Desktop Mess" is the title of the post that got the discussion going.

Taiwan Semiconductor May Win iPhone Chip Biz
April 03, 2013
Apple might be ditching Samsung as a chip partner in favor of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, according to a published report. When that happens, Apple is reportedly going to rely on TSMC to make a so-called "A7" processor.
No Clear Reason for Windows 8's Failure to Thrive
April 02, 2013
Windows 7 is the most popular desktop operating system, with 44.73 percent market share, according to Net Applications' March report. Windows 8 is not even a close second -- old standby Windows XP is. Though Microsoft released Windows 8 with great fanfare last October, it hasn't developed much traction so far. In fact, it trails behind Vista -- an OS not known for its legions of loyal fans.
Yahoo and Summly: CliffsNotes for the Mobile Era?
April 02, 2013
The IT industry is no stranger to youth worship, but Yahoo's multimillion-dollar deal for Summly pushes that notion into cradle-robbing -- well, high school-robbing, anyway -- territory. That's because the punchline beneath the headlines is the age of Summly founder. Nick D'Aloisio, 17, appears to have qualified as the world's youngest VC-backed entrepreneur.

April 01, 2013
Every now and then I'm surprised and delighted by the utter ingenuity I stumble upon in the iTunes App Store. I really like it when someone utilizes common technology for a unintended purpose -- in this case, using the camera on your iPhone to track the beat of your heart. Crazy, I know, but Instant Heart Rate - Heart Rate Monitor by Azumio does it in just a few seconds.
