Samsung Shows Signs of Softening in Smartphone Tug of War December 18, 2012
Samsung said Tuesday that it will drop its pursuit of injunctions against the sale of some Apple products in Europe. Samsung wants to compete "fairly in the marketplace, rather than in the court," according to its official statement, but the move is an odd twist in the ongoing legal saga between the two consumer electronics giants.

Bringing Production Home December 12, 2012
On Dec. 6, Apple announced that it would begin making some Macs in the U.S., reversing a trend building over several years of manufacturing computers in China and setting an interesting precedent. Apple isn't alone in this: HP has also begun shifting some of its PC production back to the U.S. of A. Before we start popping French champagne corks, we should think about what this means and why it is important.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has preliminarily invalidated 20 of the claims in the so-called "Steve Jobs" patent, the second such blow dealt to Apple's IP portfolio in recent months. The Jobs moniker refers to the Apple founder's listing as the chief inventor. The patent protects the technology used in the touchscreen interface on Apple's iOS devices.

Samsung vs. Apple: Why Samsung Wins a Pyrrhic Victory December 10, 2012
Last week was defined largely by two interesting stories. One had Apple bringing some manufacturing back to the U.S., and the other revolved around the outcome of the latest trial between Apple and Samsung. It shows you how hard it is to read a judge, though. I thought Judge Lucy Koh would likely raise the award from $1.05
Samsung and Apple appear to be in a dance to the death.

Judge Lucy Koh on Thursday heard another round of quibbling between Apple and Samsung lawyers. Calling for some sort of "global peace," she reportedly asked both sides if there was any endpoint coming in their slugfest over patent issues. Koh presided earlier this year over the high-profile, often bitter trial between the giants.

Apple Takes a Dizzying Plunge on Wall Street December 06, 2012
In one day this week, Apple's stock dropped by almost 7 percent -- its biggest single-day loss in four years, and a highly unusual development for this rock-star device maker that not too long ago launched the new iPhone 5. The decline moves Apple closer to the so-called death cross -- the point at which a stock's long- and short-term trend lines start to head down.

Apple Stores Make Tidy Profits, but They Don't Need To November 15, 2012
As the news hits that -- yet again -- Apple retail stores produce far more sales per square foot than any other retailer, including Tiffany's, the piece I most often see missing is the most important: Apple's retail sales success is a side effect, not the goal.

Apple, HTC Swap Licenses to Settle Patent Case November 13, 2012
Apple and HTC agreed to a settlement this week, shelving their years-long patent battle and agreeing to a 10-year licensing agreement. The mobile device makers have been engaged in courtroom battles over patents since 2010, when Apple accused HTC of copying certain features of the iPhone. HTC fought back, claiming Apple had infringed on several of its own wireless patents.

China's Piracy Hotbed Image Is Western Illusion, Says Official November 12, 2012
Western media's reporting distorts China's image, making it appear less willing to fight copyright piracy than it actually is, China's top intellectual property official said Sunday during the country's Communist Party Congress. China has for years been regarded as a hotbed for intellectual property theft. In April, for instance, the U.S. put China atop its annual list of piracy offenders.

Apple might be looking for ways to ditch Intel in its Macs in favor of its own silicon. The company recently restructured its executive team, placing hardware guru Bob Mansfield in charge of a technologies group that is reportedly leading new chip development at the company. That research could help transition its ARM mobile chips into its computer lineup, giving Apple products a more uniform inner makeup.

Cook Mixes a New Apple Brew October 31, 2012
While investors no doubt faced uncertainty on Wednesday as the New York stock markets opened after shutting down for two days due to Hurricane Sandy, the uncertainty over Apple's stock was for another reason altogether. Forstall ran the software team responsible for creating iOS 6, the latest software for the iPhone and iPad that included the highly criticized Maps app. With the iOS 6 launch, Apple ditched Google Maps and took its mapping technology in-house for the first time, but the move wasn't a smooth one.
