Though most major U.S. wireless carriers today tout the ubiquity of their third-generation, or 3G, wireless networks, they are simultaneously planning for the future, pushing the development of fourth-generation networks that they hope we'll all be using in a matter of years. Two of the best-known 4G technologies now on the horizon are WiMax, or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access; and LTE, or Long Term Evolution. Palm's new smartphone, the Pre, is off to a rolling good start and has plenty of room to grow, but it isn't likely to emerge as a solo iPhone killer, said ABI Research analyst Michael Morgan. His assessment comes amid widely reported news accounts of a note from Charter Equity Research estimating sales of the Pre approaching 400,000 in the month since it launched on the Sprint network. European consumers will be able to cut a few cords from their lives as early as next year, when smartphone manufacturers are expected to begin providing standardized chargers under an agreement announced Monday with the European Commission. Palm continued to hemorrhage money in the fourth quarter of its fiscal 2009. For the quarter that ended May 31, the firm's net loss totaled more than $91.5 million. However, the figures it revealed Thursday represent the months just ahead of Palm's release of the Pre. Palm's latest smartphone sold 100,000 units in its first weekend on shelves, according to partner carrier Sprint. [More...]

T-Mobile USA's follow-up to the first "Google phone" will go on sale in early August, the carrier said Monday. The "T-Mobile myTouch 3G with Google" will be a touchscreen phone and will lack the physical keyboard of the T-Mobile G1, the first phone that used Google's Android software. [More...]

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion on Thursday exceeded first-quarter expectations when it reported a 33 percent rise in profit but disappointed investors with its guidance. The Waterloo, Ontario-based company earned US$643 million, or $1.12 per share, in the quarter that ended May 30. That compares with $482.5 million, or 84 cents, in the year-ago period. [More...]

AT&T will allow some current iPhone owners to upgrade to a new model at the same price as new buyers when it is released Friday. Wednesday's announcement comes after AT&T took some criticism from iPhone owners who felt that its prices were unfair. Current owners would have to pay $399 for the cheapest version of the new iPhone 3G S, compared with $199 for new buyers. [More...]

Though the market in general has suffered this week, Apple's shares have stayed relatively stable. At market close Tuesday, they stood at $136.35, up 26 cents for the day. Research In Motion announced on Tuesday that its new BlackBerry 9630 Tour world phone will hit the shelves this summer. What's really new about it is that it supports 3G EV-DO networks in North America, as well as 3G UMTS/HSPA and quad-band EDGE/GPRS/GSM networks abroad. The climb in Apple's share prices seems to have leveled as the company's Worldwide Developers Conference, being held in San Francisco this week, continues. At the event's keynote presentation, Apple was on a tear, possibly in a bid to terrify and crush the competition.
