On the heels of record-setting attendance at their San Jose, California event, IDG World Expo has announced that registration is now open for the next LinuxWorld Conference & Expo to be held in New York City, January 30th to February 2nd, 2001.
Booming attendance at recent Linux events provides further evidence that Linux, once
the "outlaw" movement of the computing community, is rapidly becoming a mainstream operating system choice. According to IDG, the audience for Linux and open source 
tools and information is becoming more diversified and sophisticated, spurring LinuxWorld Expo exhibitors to improve both the quantity and quality of the products and services 
that are available at the show. In New York, the exhibit hall will feature more than 200 exhibitors, representing a substantial increase over the previous show’s record number of exhibitors.
Conference Program
Designed to address the educational and networking needs of this increasingly demanding audience, the Conference Program is a central component of the Linux World Expo. Conference sessions will focus on issues such as Kernel/Cluster, User Interfaces, System Administration, Perl/PHP/Python (Scripting), ASP/Web Serving, and Business/Legal Issues.
This year's opening keynote address will be delivered by Samuel J. Palmisano, president and chief operating officer of IBM (NYSE: IBM) Corporation. Additional keynotes will be given by William A. Swope, Vice President of the Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) Architecture Group and General Manager, Intel Architecture Solutions Enabling Group (SEG), Intel, Larry Augustin, VA Linux Systems’ president, CEO and director, and Dirk Hohndel, Chief Technology Officer of SuSE Linux AG.
Conference Highlights
Immediately following the opening keynote, Linux icon Linus Torvalds will present the prestigious US$25,000 IDG/Linus Torvalds Community Award. The award is given to an individual that has shown exceptional dedication to the Open Source movement through our first-ever programming contest. Past recipients include the Stampede Linux Foundation, Jay Sulzberger, The Free Software Foundation, XFree86, Inc. and Debian. Don’t miss out on seeing the winner of this award at a ceremony on Wednesday, January 31st, immediately following the opening keynote.
In a repeat of last year’s popular contest, the "Nerds" and the "Geeks" will again square off, putting their Linux knowledge to the test in the Golden Penguin Bowl. The event is hosted by Nick Petreley, Linux Evangelist for Caldera Systems and Contributing Editor for LinuxWorld and InfoWorld magazines.
Other program highlights include the Show Favorites Awards, which recognize the very best products and services being exhibited. In addition, the Linux Certification Program will be offering free review sessions and testing for the Sair Linux and GNU Certified Administrator (LCA) Level. This program is sponsored by SAIR Linux/GNU Certification. At the .org Pavilion, attendees can network with each other and hear about ongoing activities supporting the growth of Open Source.
