Media Metrix released holiday-shopping traffic numbers on Monday, and the big winners were no surprise. Amazon.com (Nasdaq: AMZN) was number one and eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) was number two, followed by eToys (Nasdaq: ETYS), barnesandnoble.com (Nasdaq: BNBN), and Toysrus.com (NYSE: TOY).
Amazon.com was a clear number one, with nearly 5.7 million weekly visitors during the five weeks from November 22nd through December 27th, while eBay was number two with more than four million weekly visitors. eToys was a distant third with 1.9 million weekly visitors.
Shares of Amazon.com soared 13-1/4 to 89-3/8 on Monday, a gain of 17.4 percent. Shares of eBay climbed 12.8 percent, rising 16-1/16 to 141-1/4. In terms of e-commerce retailers, shoppers are sticking to the names they know. It looks like investors would be wise to do the same.
